Finding an English-speaking handyman in Berlin
2026-08-08
You have found a flat, the furniture has arrived, and now you need someone to build it. In Berlin that is where a lot of new arrivals get stuck: the trade is overwhelmingly German-speaking, and a language gap turns a 90-minute job into a week of unanswered emails.
Why is it hard to find an English-speaking tradesperson in Berlin?
Because most Berlin trades are small operations of one to five people who have never needed English to fill their calendar. It is not reluctance — it is that the quote, the appointment confirmation and the invoice all run through German templates, and switching them costs the business time it does not have.
What actually goes wrong without a shared language?
The price. Almost every furniture-assembly quote in Berlin is an hourly rate of €40–50, and an hourly rate has to be discussed: what counts as work, what happens if the wall is difficult, whether travel is billed. If you cannot have that conversation, you sign up for a number you cannot verify — and you find out at the end.
What should you ask before booking?
Four things, in this order: is the price fixed or hourly; is travel included; is there a deposit; and who confirms the appointment in writing. If the answer to the first is "hourly" and you cannot follow the explanation of what drives the hours, that is the moment to look elsewhere.
How do you get a binding price without speaking German?
Use a service that publishes its rates. Our calculator prices an IKEA PAX configuration in about 60 seconds, in English, and the number it produces is the number you pay — from €89, with travel and parking included and no deposit. The appointment, the assembly itself and the invoice all run in English if you prefer.
Does English-language service cost more?
No. There is no surcharge for it, and the fixed price does not change because the conversation happens in English. Around a third of our customers have moved to Berlin recently and book this way.
