IKEA delivery in Berlin: what to expect

2026-08-08

The furniture is ordered and a delivery window has been confirmed. The part most people do not plan for is what happens between the van and the room the wardrobe is meant to stand in.

Does IKEA carry the boxes into your flat?

It depends what you booked. Standard delivery goes to your door — the entrance of the building or of the flat, depending on the service. It does not include carrying packs upstairs to a specific room, and it does not include unpacking. On a Berlin walk-up, that difference is several flights of stairs.

How heavy are the packs, really?

A PAX frame in the 236 cm height is a single flat pack that can weigh 40 kg or more, and it does not bend around a tight Altbau stairwell corner. Doors are lighter but long. Plan for the largest single item, not the average.

Should the delivery come before or on the assembly day?

Before, ideally a day or more ahead. Same-day delivery and assembly sounds efficient and usually is not: delivery windows slip, and an assembly slot that starts with two hours of waiting helps nobody. If the packs are already in the flat, we can start on time.

Should you open the boxes while you wait?

No. Leave them sealed. We sort the fittings ourselves and work through the parts lists in order — opened, mixed-up packs cost more time than they save. Do check the delivery note against the boxes, though: a missing pack is much easier to replace before the assembly date than during it.

What should be ready on the day?

Clear the wall the wardrobe will stand against and leave about 1.5 metres of working space in front of it. Tell us in advance about a resident-only parking zone, a narrow staircase or rear-courtyard access. Someone should be reachable at the start and the end — around five minutes each.
