Old furniture in Berlin: Sperrmüll and BSR

New furniture arrives on a date. Old furniture leaves on whatever date you organise, and in Berlin that is the part people discover too late — often while a delivery is waiting on the stairs.
Can you just put furniture on the pavement?
No. Leaving furniture on the street is illegal dumping, and Berlin issues fines for it. The fact that someone's sofa has been sitting on your corner for a fortnight is not evidence that it is allowed — it is evidence that nobody has been caught yet.
What are the legitimate routes?
Four. A BSR Recyclinghof, where you take it yourself and household quantities are free. A booked BSR bulky-waste collection from your door, which is chargeable. A private clearance firm, the most expensive and the fastest. Or give it away — Kleinanzeigen "zu verschenken", a Verschenkeladen, or leaving it in the courtyard only if your building explicitly allows it.
Which is cheapest and which is fastest?
Cheapest is driving it to a Recyclinghof yourself, if you have access to a van. Fastest is a private clearance, usually within a day or two. The BSR door collection sits in between on both counts and needs booking ahead, so it rarely fits a delivery that lands this week.
What about the packaging from the new furniture?
That is a separate problem and a large one — a multi-frame PAX generates a lot of cardboard, and it does not fit in a standard paper bin uncut. Break it down flat before it accumulates, or arrange for it to be taken as part of the assembly.
Do you take the old wardrobe away?
We do not currently offer disposal — it needs a vehicle we do not run. What we can do is take the old piece apart during the same appointment so it is flat, stackable and actually transportable, which is usually the step that makes the rest possible. Ask for it when you request a quote.
