A large share of our post-move jobs reaches us after the rebuild rather than before it: doors no longer close flush, drawers jam, the wardrobe is out of plumb, fittings are missing. During a move, assembly is a side task done against the clock – at Montage & Fix it is the only trade we do. We reassemble what was taken apart and correct what does not sit right, at a fixed price from €59 per item.
Why the second build is harder than the first
Flat-pack furniture is engineered for exactly one assembly. Wooden dowels and cam-lock fittings bite into the chipboard the first time; taking them apart tears material out of the hole, so the second time the joint holds only half as well. Add the constants of any move: fittings end up in the wrong box, HDF backs get creased in transit, manuals were thrown out long ago. None of that is carelessness – it is what normally happens when a piece is dismantled and rebuilt in the same week.
What can be saved – and what cannot
Torn-out dowel holes can be re-set with wood glue and hardwood dowels, and load-bearing joints additionally screwed. Missing cam locks, dowels, shelf supports and screws are standard parts and we carry them. The damage is only final once the chipboard has broken at an edge or a panel has torn through – and then we replace the single part rather than the whole piece. This is why calling early pays: the more often a damaged item is moved and re-tightened, the less is left to save.
Correcting an assembly that has already been done
We bring the carcass back into plumb, level the plinth on sloping Altbau floorboards, adjust doors to even gaps, re-seat jamming drawers and replace missing fittings. Wall anchoring is checked every time: a tall wardrobe left standing on worn dowels and not fixed to the wall is a tipping hazard after a rebuild – particularly in a home with children.
