Quiet hours in Berlin: when are you allowed to drill?
2026-09-09
Almost every assembly in Berlin runs into the same question sooner or later: is it allowed to drill right now? The answer sits in two different documents — state law and your building's house rules — and the two do not always agree. Montage und Fix Berlin plans every appointment around these hours; here is the rule behind it.
When are the statutory quiet hours in Berlin?
At night from 22:00 to 06:00, and all day on Sundays and public holidays. This follows from Berlin's state immission-control act (Landes-Immissionsschutzgesetz Berlin). During those hours drilling, hammering and comparably loud DIY noise are not permitted — regardless of what your tenancy agreement says.
Does Saturday count as a working day?
Yes. Under German law Saturday is a Werktag, a working day, not part of the weekend. So outside the night-time quiet hours you may drill on a Saturday. For anyone with a weekday job this is the practically important point — and the reason Montage und Fix Berlin also works Saturdays.
Is there a statutory lunchtime quiet period in Berlin?
No. This is the most common misconception on the subject. A quiet period from 13:00 to 15:00 appears in many house rules, but it does not follow from Berlin state law. If your house rules do set one, it still binds you — as a contractual obligation rather than a statutory one.
What if the house rules and the law disagree?
House rules may be stricter than the law, not more generous. If they say "no loud work after 19:00", that binds you even though the law allows until 22:00. In the other direction, no set of house rules can permit drilling on a Sunday.
How much of an assembly is actually drilling?
Less than most people assume. Anchoring a PAX to the wall takes four to six holes — under two minutes of actual drilling. The rest of the appointment is building, levelling and adjusting, which is effectively silent. The noise question therefore applies to a very small part of the job.
When does Montage und Fix Berlin work?
Monday to Saturday, 08:00 to 18:00. Those hours sit entirely inside the statutory limits and, as a rule, inside what Berlin house rules allow as well. If your house rules set a lunchtime quiet period, tell us when you enquire and we will put the loud work before or after it.
Should you tell the neighbours?
You are not legally required to. In practice a short note in the stairwell is the cheapest conflict avoidance available, particularly in an Altbau with thin walls. One sentence is enough: day, rough time, duration.
