MALM looks simple but has two well-known weak points: drawer runners that bind if assembled imprecisely, and the tip-over risk of the dressers. We assemble both correctly – including the required wall restraint.
What matters with MALM
The MALM dresser is the classic tip-over case – IKEA explicitly requires wall attachment. We anchor the anti-tip restraint into the actual wall type, not just the skirting board. With the drawers, assembly order decides everything: if the runners are not set exactly square, the extensions bind permanently. On the MALM storage bed, the gas struts must be tensioned in pairs and the centre band aligned precisely, otherwise the slatted base lifts unevenly.
